Spain takes Euro Cup
Meant to post these a few days ago, but Spain beat Germany 1-0 to win the Euro Cup last weekend.

The Olympic Four-Step
The early leader for the infographic of the year award:
We'll just go straight to the story itself:
For anyone who is unsure how to applaud at the Beijing Olympics, China's chief of etiquette has the answer: try the Olympic Four Step. A set of hand gestures and slogans designed by the Beijing Etiquette Academy has been approved officially by the ruling Communist Party and the Beijing Games organisers.
This is actually several weeks old, happening in conjunction with the 57-point list of acceptable behaviors for foreigners issued by the Olympics host country.
An excerpt:
No. 50: How are drunk people handled?
When appearing drunk, if a drunk person poses a threat of danger to himself/herself or to other persons, property or the public safety, public security organs should take protective measures toward [the drunk person] until he/she is sober.

More Eugene pages from 2008 Olympic track trials
The 2008 U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials resume soon but here's a look at the first several days of coverage in the Eugene Register-Guard.
Design by Rob Romig, Adam Sparks and Tom Penix.
Designer Steve Zimmerman has been posting track trials pages (more here) from The Oregonian, which also covers this event in big style.

Charlotte's thinner
There was slight redesign at The Charlotte Observer last week. The paper went down to the 46-inch web and added more information into the page toppers, among other changes.
Unfortunately, designer Lisa Pazdric, who provided these pages, is one of those getting laid off at the Observer.
UPDATE: Pazdric is joining boss Charles Apple as a designer for the new Sporting News PDF project.

C.W.S.S.S.F.
That's College World Series, Swimming and Section Flags. In Omaha, the CWS ended last week just in time for the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials to start, and for us to launch new section flags, and for part of it to happen with me hanging folks out to dry, taking off for APSE in Minneapolis.

SWIM TRIALS/NEW SECTION FLAGS
Above, the swim trials preview cover (Ben Vankat) and an inside page (Dave Croy). Below, Our first day cover and sports front, featuring a paper-wide redesign of our old section flags, to add a little more content to the top of pages.
