Freep goes red
The Stanley Cup Finals begin tonight between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Detroit Red Wings.
Here are a few preview pages from the Detroit Free Press. Cover illustration by Rick Nease, pages designed by Ryan Ford.
I like the little Penguin targets. Check out the Whack-a-Penguin online game. (I got 316.6).

How about this cover ad in Wednesday's Freep? Whoa.
And then you get Albom in a contained rail; what a joy. Good page considering the circumstances.

Bizarro baseball on the latest SI cover
Awesome illustration on the cover of this week's Sports Illustrated, by artist Mark Bagley.
Bagley is currently penciling the DC comic book "Trinity".
According to this article, Bagely didn't seem used to the speed of news production:
“Dan Didio (DC's Exec Ed) called me Thursday afternoon asking if I could do the pencils. I asked him what the deadline was and he said inked and colored by Monday. I said something nasty, and agreed to do it."
It's definitely shaping up as as Bizarro baseball season. Check out Bagley's version.

Flush it down jokes please
Big Brown wins the 133rd Preakness and is the 11th horse to give us the Triple Crown tease since Affirmed swept in 1978. The Belmont is June 7.
At the Baltimore Sun, the preview section went tab this year, mirroring the daily section's new size. Space in the sections seemed to be at a premium (no huge photo spreads), but we're all in that boat these days.
NBC offers an iso-cam look at Big Brown's Preakness run:
