APSE investigates ads
The February issue of the APSE newsletter is available as a PDF.
The featured stories include a look at advertising creeping into our "sacred" territory.
Scott Powers of the Hartford Courant writes a strong piece on the growing use of shadow ads, front page ads and goalpost ads.
The consensus from the SEs interviewed: You pretty much gotta grin and take it.
The article also gives you a nice look at the various types of ads if you aren't familiar with them.
You'll see bright orange Hummer H3 ads on a KC Star doubletruck, Comcast shadow ads on the South Florida Sun-Sentinel scoreboard, strip ads across the bottom of the Miami Herald front and small banner ads on the cover of the Dallas Morning News.
"We can be ideologically pure in the unemployment line or we can be collaborative and smart in a thriving business,” said Mike Sherman, sports editor of The Oklahoman, in the cover story.
Also in the current issue:
• The LA Times sports staff explains how they scrambled to play up Kobe's 81-point game.
• The Indy Star scrapped its NFL plan when the Colts crapped their pants.
• An obit for Joe McGuff, former KC Star sports editor.
• On the Move, which includes the fact that designer Kevin Bull is in Detroit now.

"On the Move, which includes the fact that designer Kevin Bull is in Detroit now."
Now that's speedy reporting. Guess it pays to be the newsletter's designer. He starts on Monday.

Do they post all the editions online in PDF form? That was a real good read.
