Pride of the White Sox

Chicago White Sox outfielder Carl Everett took time away from listening to his Streisand album to chime in on the pages of Maxim magazine with this gem about Wrigley Field:

"They need to implode Wrigley."

And then this one:
"Gays being gay is wrong. Two women can't produce a baby, two men can't produce a baby, so it's not how it's supposed to be. ... I don't believe in being gay."

Thank almighty Carl doesn't play for the Toronto Blue Jays, an organization proudly supporting a June 23rd game as "Pride Community Day."

The Jays even generated this promotional ad for the game.

Carl would not approve.

'I don't believe in being gay.' Wow. And we wonder (well, some do) why professional athletes don't come out until they retire. If ever.

That's a pretty ballsy poster to come out of a traditionally conservative business (the Veecks notwithstanding). Very nice.

Everett's comments are reprehensible, but this is kind of a "consider the source" quote. When he played in Boston, he was known as "Jurassic" Carl Everett because he repeatedly said he didn't believe in dinosaurs.

Implode Wrigley? I grew up a Sox fan (now a Chicago fan) and loved going to old Comiskey. They need to blow up the slab of concrete they call the Cell now.

That is a cool poster, too.

Everett was right. You "tolerant" people can't stand it when someone disagrees with your pet beliefs.

Maybe some team can have pedophile day and make a nice poster for that.

It's amazing that there are so many more "idiots" per capita per athletes than the rest of the population. Come to think of it, that ratio holds up pretty true in high school and college as well.

The only difference: pro athletes actually have people paid to record the stupid things that come out of their mouth.

And Craig, if you are indeed being serious, that's an awesome world view. No hatred and ridiculous beliefs there: all homosexuals are pedophiles! I hope you haven't passed that ignorance down to another generation, but if you did, let's pray that they didn't get that little genetic splice that makes them one of "those people". That pet belief might get a little closer to home.

Congratulations, Rob, you get a "Jump to Conclusions Mat"!

Only you raving loony lefties can make the jump between what I said and what you read.

Homosexuals aren't pedophiles any more often than heterosexuals are. Maybe less. But it's still an aberrant behavior set that shouldn't be celebrated.

Craig, would you surprised to know that I voted Republican the past two elections? Does that still make me a raving loony lefty?

Unfortunately, being a homophobe doesn't have to be a bipartisan issue. Neither does being an idiot.

No, doesn't surprise me a bit how you voted. There are misguided people in every party.

Homophobia? No, I just don't see it as a behavior pattern to be celebrated. It's like having an Adultery Night or a Let's Beat the Kids Day.

Alright, that's enough. Any more of that ilk and you're banned.

Posted by: Rich | Jun 19, 2005 7:39:17 PM

Go ahead, if that's how you want to handle someone who disagrees with your pet viewpoints. I didn't plan on making any more comments anyway, since it is obvious that dissent is unwelcome.

That's the beauty of having your own site -- you can do what you want to who you want.

Posted by: Craig | Jun 19, 2005 10:25:55 PM

If I didn't like dissent, I would have erased your comments in the first place. Your perspective is fine. This is America.
But there was no need to equate gay people with physical violence.
